FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington, DC (June 17, 2013) – The National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) announces the appointment of two new board members and election of new Officers. The new board members bring a breadth of expertise and varying backgrounds to govern this national organization working on behalf of mothers, babies and families.
The new board members include Deborah Klein Walker, EdD, vice president, principal associate/scientist, public health and epidemiology practice lead, U.S. health, Abt Associates, and Garry Curtis, President & CEO, Hager Sharp. Walker is a public health leader and behavioral science researcher with more than 40 years of experience developing and implementing programs and system change, research, evaluation, policy analysis and consulting on a broad range of public policy issues. In addition to numerous honors by maternal and child health and disabilities organizations, Dr. Walker has served on several Institute of Medicine panels, the HHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality, and in various advisory capacities for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Garry Curtis is the President and CEO of Hager Sharp Inc, one of the nation’s leading independent communications firms. Curtis guides a team of 50 in producing “communications that make a difference” in the lives of Americans, through national and local public information and social marketing programs, focused on health and education issues. Curtis brings two decades of experience being the driving force behind national health campaigns, as well as a depth of experience in the business community and association management, to the strategic counsel he provides Hager Sharp’s health clients. His understanding of communications, and the unique association and volunteer committee operating and decision making processes, will also benefit the HMHB board.
Walker and Curtis join the HMHB Board as it transitions to a new Board Chair, Janine Lewis, MPH, PhD(c), Executive Director of the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition. She is joined by Vice Chair Lauren Raskin Ramos, MPH, Division of MCH Workforce Development, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration; Secretary Diana Morales, MPH, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health; Treasurer Lars DeSalvio, Tax Executives Institute; and Member At Large Carole Klein, JD, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP.
